US CANNABIS

The United States cannabis market has seen incredible movements in legalization efforts, innovated at record pace, and seen widespread consumer and public support. Main challenges continue to be nascent regulatory structures, federal uncertainty, cash-flow limitations, and supply shocks. Overall, 2019 is shaping up to be a watershed moment in the evolution of American cannabis.

LATEST QUICK TAKE

Oct 18th 2019: Northeastern Governors announce coordinated efforts to open adult-use sales within regional bloc

  • Governors from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, states representing almost 1/5th of the US population, have met to discuss opening their states to legalized adult-use cannabis with coordinated polices on taxation, fair market practices, social justice initiatives, product regulation and consumer safety
  • New Jersey and New York made news earlier this year as their favorable odds of legalization dissipated in legislative disagreements
  • Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont all have legalized adult-use cannabis to varying degrees with robust consumer interest despite a number of logistical issues and barriers to consumer access
  • Past challenges experienced by early open markets, such as state-line sales, taxation policies driving consumers out of markets, and supply difficulties could be eased as the bloc works in concert to address market regulations
  • A region-wide open market would represent an industry wide shift in route to market as scale and stability would be greatly increased for nascent firms, while further pressuring Federal officials to come to terms with legalized cannabis products
